A Little Bit the Head of Maradona…

…A Little Bit the Hand of God.

Driving around Buenos Aires in the open-air top of a hop on hop off bus is a colorful experience. The city is known for its parks, broad boulevards, green parks, white marble statues and buildings both classic and modern. But what is striking is the public art that is not marble.

We saw several tributes to Evita Peron. Here are two of them. The one on the side of the building is made of wrought iron and hung on the façade. Evita was a popular radio personality before she was first lady, good on a mic. Although she is supposed to be on a mic, local wags say it is Evita eating a hamburger. The other one is a picture hung from a flat.

La Boca is the poor and colorful neighborhood, originally Italian immigrants. It became an immigrant melting pot.

The Boca is the home of the Boca Juniors Football Club where Diego Maradona once played. Maradona is famous for his “Hand of God” goal against England in the 1986 World Cup quarter finals. When asked if he tipped the ball into the goal with is hand, an illegal play, he said the goal was “A little bit the head of Maradona, A little bit the hand of God.” You see all sorts of Maradona wall art as well as images of Lionel Messi in Buenos Aires. Both wore number 10 for Argentina in world cup play. Pope Francis makes an appearance on a Boca Balcony with Messi.

Boca is not the only place in Buenos Airs with colorful wall art.
