Bathing Eagle

Walking through Sitka National Park today with Brian, we saw an eagle on a gravel bar in  Kassada Heen (Indian River). As I zoomed in with my camera the eagle jumped into the river and started splashing and preening. It was taking a bath. Eagles bathe to keep their feathers in good flying condition. They remove oil, dust and sometimes parasites to keep the feathers light and fluffy. After his/her/its bath the he/she/it jumped up on a fallen log to dry. We stood there for more than 10 minutes.

The river looks green, reflecting the color of the spruce and hemlock on this gloriously sunny day. These were not the only eagles, the park was full of them. Here are three more.
