About 185 million years ago, during the Jurassic Era, as the supercontinent Gondwanaland broke up magma forced its way through sedimentary rock and cooled slowly to form dolerite columns. These columns guard the entrances to Port Arthur. Cape Raoul on the West if you leave Port Arthur heading toward Hobart and Cape Pillar on the East as you turn to head toward mainland Australia. On the Cape Pillar side they rise 300 meters, almost a thousand feet, from the Pacific. In 2023 I posted a photo gallery of Cape Raoul. This year I am posting Cape Pillar on our sail out of port Arthur.
