In Praise of Elvis.

Some mornings I wake up with a terrible earworm.  Elvis Presley singing “All Shook Up.”  When that happens, the only cure is an Elvis sandwich for breakfast.  This has happened four times on this cruise so far.  It happened Saturday, and since it was a sea day and I didn’t need to grab and go, when I got to the Lido I looked up Remi, the guy who runs the toaster.

The first time I asked Remi for an Elvis.  He shook his head and I had to explain.  It’s toasted bread, I like rye it healthier, with peanut butter, bacon and banana covered with maple syrup — home fries on the side.  It is not my normal doctor-recommended high protein, low carb breakfast but sometimes the diet needs to get all shook up.

When I described what I wanted to Remi he looked at me and said “I didn’t know elves liked peanut butter.  (He pronounced elves as elv-es.)  The Hobbit does not mention this.”  Since we were recently in New Zealand and lots of tours went to the Hobitron, where the movies were filmed, I guess it was on his mind.  When I mentioned this to Suzi she said “second breakfast.”  I had to look up the reference.

The woman next to me looked at me and said “you’re weird.”  But she was having him make avocado toast.

In fact, each time I’ve ordered the Elvis I have elicited responses from fellow shipmates ranging from:

“Interesting.”  to “Humm,” to “I’ll have to try that – someday.”  Then there was just “yuk.”  But one woman, when she heard me ask for an Elvis immediately replied

“Peanut Butter, Bacon and Banana. The Breakfast of Champions.”  My type of shipmate, although she was dubious when I had Remi apply the maple syrup.

After all, Elvis fits with the musical decor of Zaandam!

PS.  On this cruise Holland has added an amenity for those who do not like to dress up.  On dressy and formal nights they serve Lobster in the Lido.  You order it and a runner brings it up from the main dining room.  I can’t eat lobster because of an allergy but Suzi likes it.  Now she can get it without the need for us to take time out to dress up before dinner.  Like Saturday when we were in a hot game of dominos and lost track of time.

  1. My favorite is peanut butter, banana, Miracle Whip on toast….(still thinking about the maple syrup)….bacon is good on anything…

  2. How does one eat the Elvis sandwich? Picking it up in one’s hands seems too messy, with the maple syrup. But trying to cut it with a knife and picking it up with a fork doesn’t sound possible. There just isn’t that much for a fork to grab?

Thoroughly enjoying your posts. Thanks for sending them.
