Look Up!

Most visitors along Lincoln Street spend their time looking in shop windows or taking pictures of the big bear who wears a plaid vest or St. Michaels Cathedral, which is a pity because if they looked up, they would see a suspended art gallery.

Visitors taking pics of St Michaels and one taking a selfie with the bear in the background.

If you look up as you walk along Lincoln St. you will see fishing buoys and boat fenders decorated by local artists suspended from light poles.  Descriptions of the buoys above are taped to the poles.

Brave Heart Volunteers is an organization that provides in-home visits, respite, grief counselling, and companionship for Sitkans in the final stages of life.  One of their main fundraising events is the Buoy Auction.  Every summer the Volunteers display the buoys along Lincoln St, in a summer long art exhibition.

Today they were swaying in a light breeze with sun coming and going making taking pics challenging, but here is a sampling of some of the buoys along the craned neck art walk.

As you walk along Lincoln St. look up!  To see pics and descriptions of the buoys or to bid on one, here is a link.

  1. Great post, Rich! I’ve walked that street on several visits to Sitka and haven’t noticed the buoys. I’ll make a point to enjoy them next time.
