I was beginning to wonder if I would make it up Harbor Mountain. A USCG Jayhawk crashed at 1800 feet and the road was closed for a while. But it is open now with only a small area restricted. We were warned by signs. (All the crew were released from Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital with only minor injuries.)
I wanted to see how my Nissan Leaf handled a steep and winding mountain road. Very well, it turns out. I also wanted to know how many miles I would need to allow on my charge to make it up and back. This morning before we went to Church my dashboard told me we had 150 miles left on the charge. When we got back for the day it told me that we had 114 miles left. The odometer told me we had gone 27.8 miles so you can do the math. The dashboard said we had used up 36 miles so the Harbor Mountain premium is an additional 8.2 miles. It is almost 5 miles up the road but the dashboard told me we used 20 miles worth of our charge climbing the mountain. I know, the math doesn’t work, but then there is the wonder of regenerative breaking that puts a charge back into the battery on the way down.
It was a beautiful day. It’s about a 200 foot climb from the parking area to the picnic shelter which is 2000 feet above sea level. We took in the views and the cool air. At sea level the temperature was a sweltering 64 degrees, at the top, a refreshing 55. Suzi and I enjoyed the wonders of both the macro and micro views.
