Sitka has added 83 feet to the top of its 1950s dam. This will allow us to generate 15 MW of energy. The greater the drop from the top of the lake, the more power we can generate. Note the new spillway at the top, and the old one 83 feet down. The dam is within 20 feet of spilling. Sitka has a second dam, Green Lake, and between them we should be generating carbon free electricity. Hopefully the diesel plant on the island will be able to take a rest. If it gets cold tonight we could be switching on the new generators. One added benefit, we will again be getting our drinking water from Blue Lake. The intake will be higher than before so there will be less sediment. We drink this water unfiltered. It comes clear and cold from the tap.
